AS travellers increasingly swap bucket-list sightseeing for holidays that offer a deeper connection with local history, food and traditions, new research has revealed the world’s most culturally rich destinations.
Cultural tourism now accounts for around 40 per cent of global tourism revenue, with experts highlighting that travellers are becoming increasingly drawn to destinations with a distinctive cultural identity.
To uncover the cities with the richest cultural offering, bespoke luxury holiday provider, Pettitts Travel, analysed destinations across a range of factors, including density of highly rated museums, historic and religious sites, linguistic diversity, number of UNESCO World Heritage sites and food markets.
Venice is crowned the world’s most culturally rich destination, with a perfect score of 10 out of 10.
The Floating City ranked best in the world for its high density of highly rated museums, with an impressive 116 four-star-and-over museums to boast of (46 per 100k population). The Doge’s Palace is Venice’s most famous museum for discovering its political history. But it’s in its world-renowned art museums that Venice truly shines.
Similarly, Venice ranked first place for its high density of religious and historic sites, at 26.2 and 76.6 sites per 100k population, respectively.
Just missing out on the top spot, with an impressive score of 9.84/10, is New Delhi.
India surpasses all other destinations for the total number of living languages, with a staggering 454 languages spoken. Hindi is believed to be the most widely spoken language, spoken by an estimated 44 per cent of India’s population, and is the primary language in New Delhi. However, English is the second most spoken language, which is good news for UK travellers.
India’s capital also ranked well for the number of religious sites, at 11 sites per 100k population, making it the sixth-best destination in the world for a religion-centred trip.
In third place as one of the world’s most culturally rich destinations is Florence, with a score of 9.62 out of 10. As the second Italian city in the top five, Florence boasts of similar cultural offerings to Venice, combining world-renowned Renaissance art, historic architecture and exceptional culinary experiences.
