JET2 Chief Executive Steve Heapy has hit back at the report from the UK’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) which warned the government that a long-running proposal to expand Heathrow Airport with a third runway is not currently compatible with the UK’s net zero emissions target.
The CCC said expansion could only be justified if the government introduces much stronger measures to ensure aviation reaches net zero emissions by 2050 – and that the aviation sector should bear the full cost of decarbonisation, rather than those costs falling on taxpayers or non-flyers.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, the UK’s largest tour operator and third largest airline, said: “The Climate Change Committee refer to ‘demand management’ in their report but let’s call it what it really is: depriving the least well off of their hard-earned and well-deserved holidays.
“These punitive tax regimes would make foreign travel the preserve of only those with the deepest pockets.”
