EU TO BRING IN NEW RULES ON HAND BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE

AFTER discussions between the European Council and European Parliament, an agreement has been reached in a bid to reinforce EU air passenger protection, and preserve air connectivity.

As part of the agreement, new air passenger rights have been introduced surrounding hand luggage allowances, and transparency of air fares.
The announcement from the European Council reads, “To create price transparency, air fares including allowance for a piece of hand baggage shall be displayed by default before the start of any booking process to facilitate fare comparisons between airlines.”
The new rule will allow passengers to take carry-on luggage (40cm x 30cm x 15cm) with no extra fee, alongside an under-the-seat personal item.
Expected to come into effect in 2027, this change could result in an initial increase of air fares, especially for low-cost and budget airlines who currently charge extra for cabin luggage.
The new rules will apply to EU airlines flying into Europe and UK carriers flying from European Airports to the UK.
Currently, there has been no confirmation if UK airlines will follow suit, meaning passengers could be required to pay extra for hand luggage on one leg of the journey.
However, there have been reports that the UK Government is likely to revise British law to match the new EU ruling.
