THE EU’s ban on carrying liquids over 100 millilitres, which had caused headaches for holidaymakers for years, is set to be lifted. The move comes after the European Commission announced that high-tech scanners capable of screening up to two litres of liquids will be rolled out… but not all airports will be ready to lift the ban immediately.

Earlier, the ban had been lifted in spring 2024, but complications with technology led to a quick reversal in September. Fast forward to July 29, 2025, and it looks like the EU is making strides again to simplify air travel security.

The new scanners use Computer Tomography (CT) technology and will allow passengers to leave laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices in their bags during security checks. The technology also allows for screening of liquids up to 2 litres, significantly reducing the hassle for travellers carrying larger quantities of liquid products.

However, while the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) has developed the technical standards for these next-gen scanners, only a select number of models have been approved and re-certified for use. Each scanner manufacturer must submit their equipment for individual certification before it can be implemented at airports.

This means that not all airports will be ready to lift the 100ml liquid ban immediately. The European Commission has approved approximately 700 scanners across 21 member states, but it’s up to each airport to decide when the new rules can be put in place.

As of now, the new screening technology is already in use at major international airports, including those in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Frankfurt, Milan-Linate, Rome, and Stuttgart. However, even within the same airport, the security procedures may vary. For example, some terminals in airports like Prague and Milan Malpensa are still waiting for re-certified scanners.

Travellers should be prepared for the possibility that security rules may vary depending on the airport and even the terminal. Until all scanner brands are certified and implemented, the best advice is to follow the strictest security guidelines to avoid any last-minute surprises at the checkpoint.
