Vast majority of tourist spots are not affected by the flare-up on the Thai-Cambodia border

A NEW flare-up of fighting on the border between Thailand and Cambodia has led to concerns about tourist travel to these two popular SE Asia destinations.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is advising against all but essential travel to affected sections of the Thailand-Cambodia border, citing ongoing gunfire, artillery use and the presence of unexploded landmines.
However, the region affected by the latest trouble, is a long way from the popular travel sites in Thailand such as the capital Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mal and in Cambodia, Phnom Penh.
However on Tuesday this week clashes along the border brought the fighting close to the tourist islands of Koh Chang, Koh Mood and Koh Mak.
Air services between the two countries are continuing to operate although some airspace is closed. There are restrictions to rail travel – trains from Bangkok currently end in Aranyaprathet rather than the border, and land borders between the two countries are closed meaning travellers cannot cross between the two countries by road.
