The Alexander Bridge in Paris – the French capital has one of the strictest emission regimes

HOLIDAYMAKERS driving in certain parts of France have been warned they could be fined if they do not display an emissions sticker on their car .

The £4 labels, which must be purchased online from the French Government website, show how polluting a car is.

Motorists who do not purchase the sticker face a fine of £58 in the first instance which rises to £154 if not paid in 45 days. Fines of up to £640 will be introduced from next year when camera enforcement goes live.

There are six different type of sticker, depending on the vehicle’s clean air emissions. The cleanest  electric and hydrogen cars require green ‘0’ markets while the most polluting diesel cars are required to display a ‘5’.

Some areas of France restrict vehicle movements based on emissions.. Paris has one of the strictest regimes with only the lowest emission cars allowed on some roads at specific times.

Among the areas of France affected by the new sticker law include Bordeaux, Aix-Marseille-Provence, Lyons, Lille, Grenoble, Nice, Rouen, Lille and Strasbourg.
