Brian Ogle at The Belvedere, Vienna – the city with the best walking and cycling infrastructure, according to a new survey by LuggageHero

A NEW study by LuggageHero reveals the best cities to explore on foot and bike to avoid public transport in times of COVID-19.

Uncertain times like these require a new approach to travelling and exploring. Whilst the government still advises against non-essential travel, borders are open, and the tourism industry builds their survival strategy on special offers. LuggageHero has compared which cities around the world are best equipped to avoid public transport and explore on foot or by bike.
Despite all governmental efforts to create pop-up cycle lanes in London and 650 km of emergency cycleways in Paris, it is Vienna which came out on top in both rankings. The Austrian capital is the most walkable and the most cyclable capital city in Europe.
Factors like air quality, safety, sun and nature make Vienna the capital with the best walking infrastructure, followed by Lisbon and New York. The least walkable urban destinations are Ha Noi, Vietnam, Brussels and Lima.
Factors such as the number of bicycle rental stations, road quality and cycle routes make Vienna not only the most walkable but also the most cyclable destination for a city break. Amsterdam, the epitome of cycling, only comes second. The third place is taken by the French capital, Paris.
The least cyclist friendly cities around the world are Hanoi, Cairo and Delhi.
Visitors who would like to ditch public transport and work their legs instead cannot ignore the British capital as a destination for a city break. London came out on top in Europe for its number of walking trails, nature and parks. Only New York offers more walking trails and only Tokyo has a bigger choice of green spaces within the city.
For those travellers that would like to explore a city on two wheels, Rome is amongst those destinations to recommend. With 4,655 cycle routes, the Italian capital occupies the third place in the ranking, after Paris with 6,274 cycle routes and Vienna with 2,2678.
