.…. WHILE BRITISH VISITORS TO REPUBLIC MUST QUARANTINE

BRITISH holidaymakers are now subject to a 14-day quarantine in the Republic as the UK was excluded from the country’s travel ‘green list’ announced today.
A stand-out ‘inclusion’ on the list is that of Greenland, which has zero interest for Irish travellers and which has no direct flights from Ireland – to get there you must fly from somewhere like Denmark, Iceland or the Faroe Islands! However, notable exclusions from the green list are popular European destinations like Portugal, Spain and France. The United States is also excluded from the approved group.
The 15 countries the Republic’s government has deemed it is safe to travel to are Malta, Finland, Norway, Italy, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, Greenland, Gibraltar, Monaco and San Marino.
A place on the green list has been afforded to these 15 destinations because they have similar or lower rates of coronavirus cases to Ireland.
The Republic’s government advises Irish citizens “to avoid all non-essential travel overseas until further notice” with the list to be reviewed on a fortnightly basis. However, the government has been criticised for “contradictory and confusing” advice by Sinn Féin Transport spokesman, Darren O’Rourke, as well as leading members of the Irish Travel Trade, worried by the continued impact on the industry.
Incidentally, in the unlikely event that you do fancy a holiday in Greenland, you have first of all to get yourself to somewhere like Iceland, Denmark or the Faroes, where you can continue your journey to Greenland’s capital ‘Nuuk’ which has a population of about 16,000. Also available are flights with the likes of Air Greenland and Air Iceland to places like Ittoqqortoormiit, Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq and Ilulissat!
And yes, before you ask, Greenland has had the virus. As at July 22 the country had a total of l3 cases with all 13 affected people having fully recovered, making it probably bottom of the world Covid-19 ladder, and possibly the only safe country on the planet.
